I grew up in the country. My father joking said that we lived in the suburbs of our town, population @ 500. Our home sat on a high hill. From there we could see the small town that lay below and mountains that towered above us in every direction.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every lifestyle. Along with the fresh airs and beautiful views, we had to deal with the inconvenience of shopping for almost anything. There was a small gas station and convenience store in town, but we had to travel several miles to shop at a modestly-sized grocery store. Shopping for clothing meant a round-trip of at least 100 miles.

I experienced culture shock, when I moved to Atlanta. It seemed that everything one might want to purchase was available within a mile radius of our homes. And often there were multiple stores to chose from. Of course, one had to endure that infamous Atlanta traffic to get there!

Nothing is perfect, but I frequently think that our current small town life comes close. It's not as quiet as the country, but it is relatively peaceful. No worry about large city traffic or crime rates. Shopping is fairly easy. All the daily essentials are available at stores close by. Unlike Atlanta, I don't have multiple music centers near me, but the one we do have is quite satisfactory and the customer service is great. Anything I can't find there can be purchased online. I have no plans to leave this small town life, but who knows what the future may hold.

It's amazing how early in life that one can glimpse a child's personality.

The first evidence of my granddaughter's artistic leanings came when, at the age of two years, she could identify colors like burgundy and chartreuse. For months she had been obsessed with drawing. She demanded that we draw pictures for her and worked on pictures of her own. By the age of three, her stick figures looked far better than mine!

It wasn't long before she was taking dance lessons and a few years later, she wanted to learn to play the guitar.
She's almost fifteen now and hasn't made a career decision yet, but I'd be quite surprised if it wasn't something involving the arts.

For the first two weeks of May, dance wins out over other artistic pursuits. Two weeks of rehersals and photos culminate with her spring recital. She'll be n stage performing ballet, modern dance and jazz routines on Friday and Saturday. Grandma will be there, of course, to cheer her on.
Mother Nature can't make up her mind this week. On Thursday, the dampness and winds made a temperature of 15F feel even colder. Yesterday, the temperature was in the sixties and remained there until 2am this morning. Hard to believe my eyes this morning, when I awoke to ice-covered trees and car.

If the weather forecast is accurate, however, we'll be seeing temperatures near 60F for Christmas day.

Some years, I am still buying gifts on Christmas Eve. Thankfully, I am more prepared this year. The tree and decorations are up and presents are purchased and wrapped. I braved the holiday crowds on Friday to purchase all the ingredients for Christmas cookies. So the next few days will be filled with the wonderful smell of baked cookies.

A friend of mine has stopped buying gifts and just gives gift certificates to family members. I like to purchase at least a couple of gifts for each family member, but frequently include a gift certificate along with those presents. So they have gifts on Christmas Day and a gift of their choosing to look forward to. I had meant to get a music-related gift certificate for my granddaughter. This is an area where it's much better to let her choose what she wants. Then I realized last night that I had forgotten to do that. Thankfully, Musiciams Friend has gift certificates that are available by email. No worrying if they will arrive on time. Glad to have avoided that crisis.Breath Of Fresh Airhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12202068810763251528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3137960910303806608.post-63393147493051953782016-09-27T21:51:00.000-05:002016-09-27T21:53:07.559-05:00Classy Music

A friend, who is a professional musician, owns a bass that costs over twenty thousand dollars. Thankfully, it brings him more than sufficient income to justify the expense.

My granddaughter's guitar cost a little less than two hundred dollars and it has served her well for the past three years. Her teacher has suggested that it's getting time for an upgrade and I've caught my granddaughter looking at Gibson SG customs online. She pointed out that there was zero percent financing for two years, then gave me a hopeful look. I'm thinking about it for Christmas. At least it is far more reasonably priced than my friend's bass.Breath Of Fresh Airhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12202068810763251528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3137960910303806608.post-521605630678700932016-09-26T21:25:00.000-05:002016-09-27T21:26:42.608-05:00Sky Watch

I'm the one, who usually drives my granddaughter to her after school activities, including dance and guitar. The dance studio is quite predictable. Tons of girls from preschool through high school attired in leotards and tutus rush into classrooms, while the parents sit on the sofas in the waiting room chatting until the lesson is over.

Guitar is far less predictable. Some days, musicians will wander into the store and I'll be treated to an awesome free concert. The next may bring a less talented musician and I'll find myself wishing that I had brought ear plugs. Sometimes there will be a debate over equipment. Does Seymour Duncan have the best guitar pedals? Then there are a few days, where the store is quiet. On those days, I can actually hear my granddaughter playing in the next room. Those days are my favorites.Breath Of Fresh Airhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12202068810763251528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3137960910303806608.post-66592218675071662112016-09-23T20:54:00.000-05:002016-09-27T20:55:40.779-05:00Pansies

This summer's sweltering temperatures killed off most of my potted flowers. Two days ago, the heat suddenly abated and is predicted to stay gone until next summer. I'm planting pansies and hope to keep them for at least two months and maybe more.

Right now, this looks like the perfect spot for a vacation!

Sadly, I have no vacation plans in the near future. While my granddaughter enjoys a break from homeschooling, I am working feverishly to get ready for the next school year. It seems that every homeschool becomes more expensive with each passing year. A foreign language is the latest edition to her studies and since I know nothing about speaking Chinese, I've had to purchase a language program. The good ones are definitely not inexpensive. Then, there is the cost of music and dance lessons. I was thankful that she already had her guitar, but now there is talk of learning a 7-string guitar. And don't get me going on the price of textbooks. . .

There is something about a dirt road that really does take me back to my home roots.

I grew up in a small rural town, where there were far more dirt roads than paved ones. On those roads, cows had the right of way, as did the occasional bear. The nearest "city" with a population of 5,000 was several miles away. Our town boasted a general store that had a remarkable inventory considering its small size. Many of my dresses were made from the bolts of fabric stacked in one corner. My first date consisted of sitting on the front steps of that store on a Friday evening, sharing an ice cream cone and chatting with other teens.

In this day of fast-paced electronic games that must continually be replaced or upgraded, I fondly remember the entertainment of earlier times. Good books were meant to be read more than once. The farm pond provided hours of swimming enjoyment in the summer and ice skating in the winter. Rainy days were invitations to gather our instruments and make music. I played the piano, my cousin was on the saxophone and my best friend brought her selmer clarinet. Soon, my mother's voice would join in from the kitchen and my father's voice rang out from his office. Evening entertainment included jigsaw puzzles and board games. Those board games never needed to be upgraded. Our scrabble board was over forty years old. While we played, we talked. Just face-to-face conversation, no texting or social media needed. Country roads, take me home.

Christmas, of course!
How many of you are ready? Luckily, we are pretty well prepared this year. Decorations are up, gifts purchased and at least half of them are wrapped. I'm feeling good about that and remembering a few years, when I was still frantically searching for gifts on Christmas Eve.

If you're still trying to find the perfect gift for Mom, I have a suggestion. How about a mother's ring? Like something a bit different? Consider a mother's necklace or pendant. I had only thought of the more traditional rings, until I saw some gorgeous ones at www.joyjewelers.com/modules/mothers. There's even stackable mother's rings, which include a separate ring for each child. This is also a great idea for grandmothers. I remember how thrilled my mother was, when she got a grandmother's ring one Christmas. She put it on her finger and never took it off. Don't wait, though. Shipping is speedy, but we are getting very close to Christmas.

If I only had to play Santa to our dog, my budget wouldn't suffer a bit. It's not that he doesn't love to get presents. After fourteen Christmases, he knows what's happening when it's time to open the gifts under the tree. He sits by the tree, shivering in anticipation as the presents are distributed. One year, when money was tight, we wrapped a couple of his old tennis balls and put them under the tree. He ecstatically ripped off the wrapping and enjoyed them as if they were new.
The rest of the family is not so easy. Electric drums and an electric guitar top my granddaughter's list, along with some speakers, so she can blast her music at the neighbors. Her mother scratched speakers off the list in favor of headphones. We've both been searching the internet for the drums and guitar, but even the lowest prices are a bit daunting. I'm sure we'll figure something out and hopefully soon

Yes, colder days are coming, but thankfully they don't last too long and even an inch of snow is an infrequent thing.

As a young adult, most of my parties followed that format,

When I got my own apartment, however, I decided I wanted to host a
holiday gathering that was a bit more elaborate. There was just one problem; my dining table
was an old card table that couldn't possibly hold food for twenty people and
certainly couldn't seat them. My older
brother, who managed a food service came to the rescue. He advised having a buffet and even loaned me
a long table. When I first saw it, I
was a bit disappointed, because it wasn't that pretty. Then he rolled out a cart of hanging table
skirts. That made all the
difference. Set up against one wall of
my living room and decorated with a holiday centerpiece and candles, that
skirted table gave a look of elegance to my first grown-up party.

I remembered that party, year later, when I started working
for a linen service. In addition to linens
and towels, they also handled a large quantity of table skirts. They were used in restaurants, of course, but
also by businesses that hosted conferences and other events that used display tables. The
linen service had dozens of carts designed particularly for holding table
skirts. There were even special skirt
hangers that held the skirts securely and prevented wrinkles. Just one of those little details that makes
all the difference. If you'd like to see

Elephants never forget? I can almost here this pair's conversation. "It's this way." "No, I'm sure we have to go this way."

I guess that even animals have their senior moments. For humans that is compounded by our ever changing environments. Last week, I sat listening to my granddaughter and her guitar instructor debate the merits of various electric guitars and drums. Even music has been altered by technology which has taken us from acoustic instruments to electronic and now to virtual instruments that can be easily transported anywhere with a muse receptor. Technology has touched almost every aspect of our lives and with each change there is something new to learn. It's not enough to never forget. Humans must also keep pace with rapid change.

There's nothing like "sitting on top of the world" and anticipating the scary, but oh-so-fun ride down.
I think the only thing that topped climbing to the top of the ladder was learning to climb up the slide itself and feeling a bit superior to the "little kids" who hadn't mastered that art. I had to get all my practice at the school playground, since we didn't have one in our backyard. Actually, I don't remember seeing them in anyone's backyard. Backyard playsets became more popular when my daughter was growing up and almost a staple by the time my granddaughter came along. She had a simple swing and slide set that got a lot of use. She was a bit envious, when the girls across the street got an expensive wooden play structure that filled their whole backyard. Their father and grandfather spent every weekend for a couple of months putting it together. I felt a bit sorry for them, because the girls only played on it two or three times. When they decided to sell their house, the real estate agent advised them to take it down. Simpler was definitely better!

Speaking of slides, few things are more annoying than a drawer that sticks or falls out if pulled out too far. If you've got drawers like that, you might want to check out full extension drawer slides at ovis. Now that's a worthwhile investment.

When children are getting restless and trying your patience, take them for a nature walk. There is always something new and you'll feel better after taking a nature break.

I first gave this advice many years ago, when a good friend wished that there was something beyond just house cleaning and child care. With four preschool children, there was no denying that her days were full. She was skeptical, but was desperate enough to give it a try. She visited a local park with trails that would accommodate a stroller for the two youngest and let the three and four year old lead the way. Away from the demand of home, she was able to relax and enjoy her children's discoveries. She returned home feeling less tired. As a bonus, the activity left the children ready for a nap!
<di style="clear: both;"> Wouldn't mind hanging out with this fellow for a while. What can beat the great outdoors and the awesome sense of accomplishment that comes from hiking up a mountain trail?

Thumbs up for the walking stick, but I'd want a little more equipment for a mountain excursion. In my hiking days, I would squeeze food, water, bedding and a tarp for shelter into the smallest backpack I could find, when I planned to be on the trail overnight. I tried several adult backpacks, but found that their size cumbersome. Eventually, I found one intended for preteens that did the trick.

I thought of it the other day, when I saw small children waiting for the schoolbus. Nowadays, lots of kids use them to carry books and supplies. I worry, when I see a youngster with a backpack so large that it threatens to topple them. A shame, because there are plenty of child-sized available and I've even seen some cute personalized toddler backpacks available online. They would be perfect for school or a family nature outing to enjoy the last of our summer days.

You hear a lot of warnings about getting too close to these little masked bandits, but there is no denying their cuteness.

Talk about angry birds. Looks as if this pair isn't seeing eye to eye!
Their human equivalent might be squabbling spouses or perhaps a blind date that just couldn't make a connection.

Speaking of connections, they are just as important in the music and photography worlds. Whether its an XLR 5 pin for lighting control and stereo headphones or a 4 pin for video and film, professional level connections ensure a quality experience. If only they could be purchased to insure good human and penguin connections!
