Lady in Red

One of my earliest memories, although not my fondest, is a ladybug who decided my belly button made an excellent resting spot. According to family members, I ran around our lawn screaming, but the ladybug just sat quietly and didn't fly off. The story sounds so funny in retrospect, but I remember the terror that I felt over one tiny red bug.

It's a good thing I got over my fear. At our Georgia home, crops of ladybugs would hatch at least once a year. I've read that ladybugs can lay up to 1000 eggs in a lifetime. Having seen many square feet of the back wall of our home covered with ladybugs, I don't find that difficult to believe. The back wall had a southwest exposure and I later learned that ladybugs favor these.
